Clarke’s – Tropic

For our epic visit to Bryce Canyon, we set up camp in Tropic, Utah. Yes folks, it’s another teensy town in the middle of nowhere. The food choices were particularly paltry. So late at night on a sunday, after driving around aimlessly, we just ended up down the street at Clarke’s. We were absolutely starving. Freshly baked warm bread with whipped butter… yum!
Here’s where things just get nuts. This is supposed to be a chef salad. Yes, a chef salad. But instead, what we got was a giant heap of chopped ham and some actual salad parts. It was beyond ridiculous. And it took S about 5 solid minutes to pick out all the ham. And it filled a big bowl. And it really pissed her off. I understand that some people want a bit of protein in their salads, but really, a salad is a salad for a reason, because someone wants a salad. If she wanted to order a plate of ham with a side of greens, that’s what she would have ordered. Clarke’s, you seriously need to rethink the contents of your chef salad. For the love of food, please reconsider the proportions.
I lucked out because I ordered the veggie burger, which was just fine. I also got a little side salad with my burger and that was fine too, because it was actually a salad and not a giant bowl of ham. Service was fine but we felt slightly out of place.

Stan’s Burger Shak – Hanksville

After leaving Moab, we headed westward, and spent an evening in Hanksville. It’s a town that’s about 50 ft long. Our motel was within walking distance from Stan’s Burger Shak. In fact, our continental breakfast was there and you get a coupon for the place upon check in. With very few other options, we had to check it out. It’s attached to a gas station, so it’s handy too.
Here’s another animal head!
S was feeling a bit healthy, so she got the turkey and avocado sandwich. White bread, I love crappy white bread like this. I bet I would have liked this sandwich.
I wasn’t feeling healthy so I got a buffalo burger and onion rings. These onion rings were way overcooked so it was a crunchy mess. It doesn’t mean I didn’t like them, but really, they should have paid attention a bit more so they were cooked correctly. Did this burger taste like buffalo? I have no idea, this was my first time eating a buffalo burger. It tasted pretty much like a regular meaty burger, but maybe a tiny bit different. But it wasn’t anything offensive or even too noticeable. I liked it just fine. It was a formidable burger, considering it was attached to a gas station. When in Hanksville, be sure to visit!

Memorial Day Eats

On this past super hot memorial day, I went for a cookout at M’s mom’s house in Newtown Square. Wow, I hadn’t been there for such a long time. I have fond memories of playing in my “rock” band in high school and ruining their deck. Ah, teenage good times. Speaking of good times, we thoroughly enjoyed these mojitos, made with mint fresh from their garden.
P manned the grill and cooked up burgers, veggie burgers, and hot dogs galore.
Somehow, it almost turned out to be a salad party. We had a multitude of bean, veggie, chicken, and potato salads. Also, one of the guests brought some deviled eggs, complete in deviled egg trays. Gadgets never fail to impress me. And this jar of pickles nearly killed us. P had stuck a bunch of scotch bonnets into this jar and did not warn anyone. So when you bit into this innocuous looking pickle, it lit your mouth on fire. I almost cried.
Dessert was just as fun. We had some strawberry shortcake with a homemade pound bundt cake that was super dense and amazing. There were brownies that I absolutely loved, even though they were out of a box. There were even two homemade ice creams. Plus, they have a kick ass back yard and deck and it was just lovely being out, even though it was beyond hot!
