New York Cream Puffs!

My brother, J, and I like to do quality brother/sister bonding in a very specific way. Her name is Bjork. You all know her. She’s crazy, she’s kooky, she’s an Icelandic pixie who wears swan dresses to the Oscars. Love her or hate her, she’s got moxie, and tons of talent. Heck, we’ve flown clear across the country to see her. This time around, we just took a quick ride on the train to the Big Apple. That is after he drove in from Ohio. So we made a weekend out of it. And a dining weekend, to boot.

When we arrived on Saturday, it was lunch time. And I knew just what I wanted. A cream puff. Yes, a cream puff. I’d heard about this elusive Japanese import on another blog. Where to find this delectable pastry? Beard Papa’s. Their mascot is a white bearded fisherman looking fellow’s head, puffing on a pipe. This particular Beard Papa’s had a Café Zaiya attached to it, which served fast Japanese food. It was on E. 41st, right by Bryant Park. On this little strip of “Library Way” there were several other Japanese businesses, some food, some not. Like a mini japan-town, or japan-half-a-block.

The food Café Zaiya served is all packaged, like bento boxes. They have many options, including some udon soups. I was more interested in the cream puffs, so I just went with a chicken katsu don bowl. It came with some chicken katsu over rice with the sauce. It was just ok. I also had an Honest Ade Limeade. Honestly, it needed more sugar. They make it that way on purpose, with only half the sugar, but really, they need to put a bit back into it. It was quite blah and disappointing. J got a salmon bento box and his was just ok too. He ate everything though, because that’s what he does. He shovels everything in sight. He’s also been to Japan many times, so he knows how good a bento box can really be. And these were only so-so.

On with the cream puffs! These little delights are prepared on the premises. They make the pastry first and leave it devoid of any cream. Then when you order, they fill it! Then sprinkle it with some powdered sugar. Oh my! The pastries themselves are very light and crispy. But not in a crunchy way. The cream is abundant, and you get some in every bite. We both loved it. We wanted to take many of them home with us. But we figured they wouldn’t do too well traveling for several hours in a non-refrigerated box. Oh sadness. I will simply have to wait for my next NYC trip or hope that a Bear Papa’s chain finds itself to Philadelphia. What we need is a Beard Papa’s and a Capogiro next to each other, I find an apartment above them, and never leave.

Above 70

Today was unusually warm, and above 70 degrees for the first time in 2007. So like everyone else who got so excited about it, I ended my evening with a trip to the local Rita’s. As I was on my way home, my friend K called and asked if I wanted anything from Rita’s. She had just left her house to get to Rita’s, and I would pass it on my way home. So it all just worked out.

There was a big line, of course. I went with half tangerine and half Alex’s Lemonade. The tangerine was pretty good, and had real chunks of tangerine rind. A bit surprising at first, but full of flavor. The lemon, eh, was a bit bland. Sorry Alex. K went with wild black cherry and lemon, and man, am I ever glad she got that wild black cherry. It was amazing. There was such a rich and deep flavor about it. It tasted like a really excellent black cherry soda. Note to self, next time get a whole wild black cherry one.

I’m not the biggest fan of Rita’s, as I think their flavorings taste a bit artificial, but it’s handy in that it’s all over the place and easy to locate when you’re hankering for water ice. I have a friend who is from Philadelphia but moved to Austin to open a water ice shop – Jim-Jim’s Water Ice. That takes balls! I hope you have a great season this year!

Salad Fever

Mmmmm… we had wraps and salads from Saladworks Wednesday. They had 5 different types of salads, including my favorite – Mandarin Chicken. It has greens, cucumbers, dried cranberries, chopped chicken breast, mandarin oranges, carrots, chow mein noodles, and the sweet oriental sesame dressing (I threw some other stuff from other salads in mine too). YUM. Basically it’s all sugar, but it’s all so good. I’ve had it before with breaded chicken chunks (basically chopped up chicken fingers) and baby spinach, and it’s even better that way. I don’t like those weird random mesclun greens anyway. I like plain lettuce or spinach. The wrap was an odd egg salad and chicken salad combo. I’m not sure why they were together. But it was fine nonetheless.

They also had these amazing giant cookies. I had the oatmeal raisin and it was delightful. It was too big for me to even eat in one sitting. Bigger than my hand, seriously. I was in a training class today too, so they brought us sandwiches from Panera. Ugh. I was excited because I really like their chicken salad, but there was a random mix of sandwiches today. I ended up with a roast beef sandwich that looked safe enough, but then I bit into it and it had gobs of mustard on it. I don’t like mustard at all. But I’d already started eating it so I felt I had to eat it. All I could think to myself was “yum, I am really enjoying this mustard sandwich”. Note to Panera – don’t put mustard or mayo on sandwiches. Just give us some packets so we can decide on our own!
