I got invited earlier this week to go to Whole Foods in Plymouth Meeting and try their new tacos. So they have a taco truck now, called Blue Route, and it’s on their roof. Yeah, you heard me right. It’s a taco truck. But it’s on the roof. For real. So they took a taco truck, without an engine, and hoisted it up onto their roofdeck with a crane. Apparently, they did it at 4:30 in the morning. Some lady just told me this. It’s going to be open pretty much every day, so anyone can get taco truck tacos, even in the burbs! The official grand opening is Friday, April 15. That’s today!
The menu is simple – tacos! And some drinks.
From left to right we have the fish taco, carne asada taco, and the pork carnitas taco. The tecate fish taco with chipotle mayo is typically made with haddock but on this night was made with halibut. There’s also a slaw made of cabbage, carrot, lime juice, and cumin. This was my favorite of the three. So good! The carne asada is of course hunks of steak with queso frseco, onion, and cilantro. The pork carnitas is spiced pulled pork with tomatillo salsa, tomatoes, garlic, and spices. These were also good, but the fish taco ruled. They are all served on white corn soft tortillas. Some have one tortilla, some have two, there didn’t seem to be a pattern. They also have a spiced chicken and a veggie taco. If the three that I tried were any indication, the other two are probably also very good. Considering the lack of other real taco options out there (maybe besides La Michoacana in Norristown), I’m quite excited about having this permanent truck in the burbs!

When I don’t want to cook or have my mom cook, I love heading over to H Mart for something good and quick and hearty. Here are some selections. This is a random spicy pork stir-fry dish from monsieur tong tong. I mean, it was ok, but I wasn’t sure what type of cuisine this was supposed to be. It was pretty spicy.
here the tonkatsu from Monsieur Tong Tong. By far, this is their best dish, and probably some of my most favorite tonkatsu of all time. The piece of pork is absolutely huge and I really like their sauce. I could seriously eat this all the time.
My mom’s hwedupbap type of dish… with all kinds of shredded fresh veggies, imitation crab, fish eggs, and raw fish slices. Isn’t it colorful and beautiful? It tasted great too, except there were some bits of green stuff I did not like. I wasn’t quite sure what it was… it wasn’t exactly sesame leaves, but it wasn’t either. Whatever it was, I did not like!
A heaping bowl of chajangmyun, served with julienned cucumbers on top. For whatever reason, they always serve chajangmyun with cucumbers. I’d recommend all of these to try, except for the pork stir-fry. It’s ok, just not particularly interesting or great.
Eugene ended up being a good half-way stopping point for the long journey from the coast back to Bend. Plus, we had to stop so that J could watch a World Cup game. Much to my surprise, the Eugene Saturday Market was taking place, which of course had a farmer’s market along with it and a food court. Everything was locally grown and looked fabulous. There were berries everywhere.
White raspberries!
But really, what everyone had, and what looked the best, were the oregon grown strawberries.
There were veggies as well, of course. Here are some beautiful cherry tomatoes of different colors. Although I know that tomatoes are actually fruit.
There were also tons of root vegetables, like these turnips and beets. Potatoes were also all over the place.

Along with some cucumbers and some onions and some even more gorgeous red torpedo onions.
This dude was selling crazy mushrooms that he grows. I wonder what other kinds of non-food mushrooms he grows? Because after all, this is Eugene, and man, hippies abound!
Dungeness crab is everywhere in Oregon, and you can even find some here.
Here, they were selling freshly homemade salsas as well as fresh corn tortillas that a lady was cooking up, right on the spot.
There were food vendors in the proper food court, which was part of the regular craft vendor part. But in the farmers market, there were also a few food vendors, including this pastie shop.
J got some fish tacos. He liked these, but was surprised by the spicy salsa that was plopped on top.
I got a little teriyaki bowl from a food court vendor called “nice rice”. My nice rice bowl was brown rice topped with teriyaki chicken and veggies. It was perfectly fine. All the produce looked amazingly fresh, and if I lived in Eugene, I would hope to get my fresh fruits and veggies here all the time!

" list. So of course, I decided to try them all. Join me for this 15-post series, as I test out each of these cocktails to see just how worthy they are.
