Tulsa Gastropubbin’

I had an extremely early flight on friday morning, so I spent thursday night in Tulsa proper. Tulsa, the “big city”. After doing a little roamin on yelp, I decided to go to FB Oscar’s Gastropub which is located near downtown Tulsa. I have no idea about the neighborhoods in Tulsa, but where Oscar’s was seemed to have a number of restaurants and clubs/bars and such. And there were beautiful old craftsman style houses everywhere. It seemed to be a pretty cool neighborhood, and it was near the river. The place is nicely decorated and pretty big on the inside. There are two huge skylights with these funky balloon shaped thingies hanging down. There’s a big bar with tons of beers and outdoor dining in the front. I asked the bartender if I could only pick one thing, what should I pick, and he recommended the kobe beef meatloaf. I had been eating beef non-stop for days, and I really wanted to go meat-free, but I decided to get it anyway. When I was reading some reviews about this place, other people had raved about it, so I had to go with it. This dish is regularly served with drunken mushrooms and braised spinach. I told him that the two things I really don’t like are mushrooms and spinach, so could he just give me something else as a side. He said he would make me happy. Oh boy, did he!

The meatloaf came topped on a heap of goat cheese mashed potatoes. There was some sort of onion compote type thing on top of the meatloaf, which tasted like it was braised in red wine vinegar. And surrounding the entire plate was a melange of stir fried veggies in an awesome asian-inspired sauce. It’s like he was reading my mind! Everything on this plate was delicious – the meatloaf, the potatoes, the veggies. Everything had tons of flavor. I loved everything about it. And it was tons of food too. This was one of the best entrees I’ve had in a long time. The whole experience was impressive – the food, the service, the ambiance. Oscar’s has the total package!

Royal Tavern Burgers

When thinking of a place to eat on saturday night, I remembered that the food network had just named the best burger in PA, and so we headed off to the Royal Tavern. Their specials chalkboard menu made me want it all. Seriously. Especially all of their soups and desserts. The country fried flank steak and the tasmanian salmon steak both looked crazy good.
They had a couple of derby day drink specials. J and O both got some pomegranate sangrias.

M got the roast chicken entree. This thing was ginormous. I think she took like… 3 small bites. I felt bad about all that leftover food. I would have so eaten that drumstick.
Both J and O got the burger. This thing is rather unwieldy. It’s a thick burger, with bacon, caramelized onion, smoked gouda, and a fried long hot pepper, all in between a thick brioche bun. It’s like thick upon thick, which results in unwieldy. But they both agreed it was a good burger.

I got a meatloaf sandwich, which also included chopped bacon, provolone, fried onions and porcini mushroom ketchup, on ciabatta bread. Holy lord was this good. I did not expect this to be so good. First off, the meatloaf was good. Secondly, everything else on it was amazing, especially the onions and the ketchup. I scarfed this down like I hadn’t eaten in days. It’s amazing how much food I can shove in my mouth. I think it’s like my favorite sandwich in Philadelphia now. All of the sandwiches are served with fries, and a garlic aoili sauces comes with too. This sauce also rocks.

Service was fine. This place is pretty small. We got here fairly early so it was easy to get a table, but I can see why this place gets crowded. So get here early if you want a table, or you’ll end up waiting a long time or standing at the bar. It’s dark and moody here too, but the christmas lights lighten it up a bit.

Sidecars At The Sidecar

After not meeting up with some people at Ten Stone, we kept walking to the Sidecar. And we ended up getting a couple of Sidecars. These ones came in chilled, sugar-rimmed martini glasses. And they were gooooooood. There’s something about the service here though… it’s hit or miss… and mostly miss. But at least their food and drinks are good, so I tend to forgive.
