boozings – Bloody Mary At Cantina Los Caballitos

Welcome back to another installment of boozings, where we try all of Philly’s Top 15 Drinks! Next up we go to Cantina Los Caballitos, for the Bloody Mary. Vodka, check. Tomato juice, check. Worcestershire sauce, tabasco, and whatever else, check. Lime and lemon, celery and olive, check!
F it this drink is good. And big. And spicy. And cheap. Served in a big ass pint glass, this thing has kick, of the boozy and spicy variety. It just goes on forever, too. How can this only cost $5? It’s definitely the cheapest drink on the list, and nearly the biggest. I’m not feeling too much love for the food here, but their bloody marys are alone worth the trip.

Mexican Brunch – Cantina Los Caballitos

I’ve been to the Cantina a couple of times to drink, but never to eat. I had to come here for the sake of blogging, so we took in some brunch as well. Complimentary chips and salsa. The green salsa had a strange taste. Not bad, just strange. I couldn’t quite place my finger on what the strange taste was. The red one was just fine. Good chips too. Thin and crispy, not greasy.
H/A got the mexican style beef stew. Basically, it was like a mexican style chili with some stewed beef. Nothing thrilling, but if you like chili and mexican flavors, then why not!
H/A and J both got burritos, but you know what burritos wrapped in paper look like. They just look like a couple of white lumps. They both got beef burritos, and the steak in those was excellent! I got the chilaquiles. That’s the plate of mexican slop you see on that plate. It’s a huge ass plate too. It’s a tortilla casserole with guajillo sauce, queso anejo, sour cream, and in my case, chicken. It’s tasty, but it’s not much to look at. In fact, it looks kind of disgusting. Luckily, it tastes much better. The portion of this was gargantuan. I barely ate like 1/4 of this.

J also got a vegetarian hash with tofu and tempeh. The tempeh was kind of gross, but the tofu was fine, and the onions were delicious. But the fried eggs on top? Whoa, some of the best fried eggs I’ve ever had. Who knew? Service was ok. They play some good music there and have cool mexican movie posters. Everyone has tattoos. Their drinks are good and strong, and personally, I think the drinks are what make this place. The food is only so-so. If you want good mexican, go to a taqueria with a less hipster setting.

boozings – Hemingway At Distrito

Welcome back to another installment of boozings, where we try all of Philly’s Top 15 Drinks! Next up we go to Distrito, for their take on the Hemingway. This version is made with Hornitos tequila that is infused with chile, grapefruit juice, topped with a maraschino, and served in a very wide-mouthed margarita type glass.

Whoa, when they say chile infused, they mean it. I mean, you can definitely taste the smoky spice, and your mouth kind of feels like campfire with every sip. It’s a good drink though, but spicy, so totally bizarre. But I can definitely say I liked this drink. But the spice was probably exacerbated by the fact that right before this drink, I had a giant vat of pho bo kho, which is also a very spicy dish. So having that spicy soup followed by this spicy drink was probably not the best idear. There’s also a lot to drink here, so you’ll have many many campfirey sips. And yeah, it’s strong too, which seems to be the common thread running through all these Top 15 drinks.

Extra props to Distrito for having the most photo-favorable bar counter, ever. With the built-in uplighting and the resined in scorpions, they made it extra easy to capture cool pics. Also, their glassware for standard cocktails is also quite photogenic.
