Luxury Diner – Cheyenne

We left Colorado and headed north to Wyoming. Why? Because I’d never been to Wyoming, and seeing as how it was so close, I thought we should check it out. Ugh. I don’t know about the rest of Wyoming, but there isn’t anything to do or see in Cheyenne. Even the landscape was blah. Just vast and flat and lifeless, like their downtown area. So we had to eat something, and we ended up at Luxury Diner. The name is funny because it’s so beyond not luxurious. But it is kind of cute.
Here’s S’s chef salad. We were still outmeated from the day before, so we were both craving vegetables. There are plenty of veggies here, but there’s also plenty of cheese and cold cuts. I don’t know where these mushrooms came from, but they must have been fed steroids.
I got a side salad instead of fries with my meal. Oh this salad was more than welcome in my belly. Crunchy fresh vegetables. My body had so missed them!
My main meal was a turkey club. Come on now, who doesn’t like a good ‘ol turkey club every now and then? And this turkey club was quite good! Service was friendly and the food showed up quick. But we were the only ones eating there. All in all, it was a nice, quick, and cheap little meal!

Biker Jim’s Gourmet Dogs – Denver

Little known to S, my travelling companion, our first stop in Denver wasn’t going to be a hotel or a sit-down restaurant. No. We were going to go to a parking lot. Of a liquor store. To a hot dog cart. She couldn’t have guessed this in her wildest dreams. And I didn’t want to let her know where we were going, except the stupid GPS-voice lady let the cat out of the bag. Bitch. But if you leave trip planning to me, you know it’s going to be food-heavy. So we started our Colorado journey with Biker Jim’s Gourmet Dogs.
During the week this is normally downtown. But on the weekends, they stake out the parking lot of Argonaut Liquor, which by the way, also kicks ass. This is the kind of liquor store I would want to visit.
Biker Jim’s offers a variety of unique gourmet and exotic meat sausages. They try to use local ingredients when they can. The dogs are split and slightly charred. The standard fixins are cream cheese and caramelized onions. And the secret to caramelizing the onions? Cola. Yep. We saw him just pouring out some of his coke onto the onions. Now I have to try this! We weren’t sure what to order, so we asked for suggestions. S got the reindeer, which he recommended as the gateway sausage for first timers. It was delicious! It was smoky, not too spicy, just right.
I asked him to surprise me. He asked me whether I wanted sweet or spicy and I said sweet. So this is how I ended up with the wild boar sausage. Sweet is it! The meat is mild and tender and there are bits of apricot and cranberries inside to add even more sweet! I loved it. It was just what I wanted, but didn’t even know that I wanted. The dogs come on a bigger locally baked bun, but it’s not too big. In this case, it’s just right. Because the dogs are split in half, it’s also easy to eat. And I loved the cream cheese and onion combo. I didn’t even bother bastardizing it with any other condiments. We wanted to stay and try all the other types but we were already full from the one. But if we had been able to, we sure would have tried them all!

Oktoberfest At Brauhaus Schmitz

There’s nothing like a roasting piglet on a spit to signify an Oktoberfest celebration. Or a man dressed in lederhosen. This poor little beast was the featured guest at the outdoor fest at Brauhaus Schmitz.
Even though H/A had apparently just eaten a giant slice of pizza at Lorenzo’s, he still got some kind of sausage. Yeah, I don’t know what kind this is, but I’m thinking meat or lamb.  He got some slaw and some potato salad too. And wouldn’t you know it, I’m a big fan of this potato salad now. It’s vinegary and awesome.
P got a random charred sausage from the grill. It came with a hunk of mouth cutting bread. So I have no idea what kind of sausage this is either, but I loved it. It’s pink, just pink. And I’m sure, formed with some mysterious concoction of random meats and meat parts. But it is absolutely delicious.
I got a giant pretzel. I mean really, it doesn’t get more “giant pretzel” than this! It was thick and dense and warm! And it was perfect for soaking up the beer… all that delicious beer in my commemorative Oktoberfest 2010 plastic stein!
