Wedge + Fig is an adorable cheese shop and casual cafe in old city. I stopped by recently for brunch in their courtyard, truly an oasis. You would think it would be hot out there, but it’s fairly shady and covered, so it was quite lovely. You also get to look into the kitchen to see what everyone’s up to.
I decided to get an orangina just for kicks. I’d forgotten how refreshing this little funny bottle can be.
We both ended up getting a 1/2 sandwich and soup combo. They ended up putting the switching the sandwiches, so this was not my sandwich, but it was my soup. This sandwich is the Svenson, with lemon-dill creme fraiche, nova lox, and sprouts on pumpernickle bread. My soup was one of the specials of the day, which was a creamy lemon and corn soup. It was lemony, it was corny, it was cool and refreshing.
This is my sandwich, the Blue Figs, with fourme d’ambert cheese, fig preserves, and prosciutto on pretzel bread. Ooh, this thing was good, especially the pretzel bread! It’s pressed too, so really easy to eat. i wish I’d had a whole sandwich. The soup that E got was another special of the day, and it was a summer fruit gazpacho, with mango, berries, and other delicious fruits. It tasted like a smoothie! But in a bowl! E also got a side of bacon. Look how lovely and thick that bacon is. Yum.
Here’s what you see when you look up from the adorable courtyard. We both really loved this place, and plan on going back again and again. The inside is adorable too, with some small tables for dining and random food items, along with of course, cheese! There weren’t too many people here, which made us worry, because we don’t want this place to ever go away! Service was friendly, food was great, the courtyard is cool and inviting. I want to try everything on their menu!

E and I went to one of JG Domestic‘s Sunday Suppers and had a veritable feast. When we saw the menu in advance, we thought oh, ok, we get to pick a starter, pick our meat, and pick some sides. Then we were informed by our server that we got EVERYTHING on the menu. We were floored… and also totally excited! There was also live music!
We first stared with the house baked dinner rolls, served with whipped vermont butter and apple gelee. Whoa, these were warm and buttery and delicious, but we both limited ourselves to one. We weren’t going to ruin ourselves for the rest of the meal. It’s all about pacing!
Next up was the louisiana style gumbo with okra, pulled chicken, and andouille sausage. Man alive, I love gumbo! And I loved this version! It was rich, thick, and hearty, and I love me some okra!
We moved onto the jersey tomato salad with garlic crouton, basil, and fresh ricotta. Tasty tomatoes are sometimes hard to come by, I know I often buy sucky ones. But these were sweet and juicy and full of the right flavors. They must have all the right connections!
We also got a big bowl of local baby greens, seasoned baby veggies, with a citrus vinaigrette. This wasn’t a particularly exciting salad, but all the ingredients were top notch.
Onto the meats! The smoked baby back pork ribs. Yum! There was plenty of tender meat on this and it had a nice smoky flavor.
The other main entree was the fire roasted bbq london broil. Delicious! There were a few chewy bits but the sauces were nice and zesty.
Here is a giant bowl of vermont cheddar and roasted garlic whipped potatoes. This was the only dish that we possibly could not finish. It was so much! We also had the chilled cucumber, roasted peppers, and feta salad. I love cucumber salads! Again, all their ingredients were of the highest quality. I need a connection to their hook-up!
I am crazy about corn, and I am especially crazy about new jersey corn. Oh how I love jersey sweet corn on the cob!
Here we have the bbq baked cranberry beans and some pickled green beans and pearl onions. Man, I think these baked beans were some of my absolute favorites of the night. And I loved these green beans as well, as I love beans when they’re very crispy and practically raw. I can’t stand limp green beans!
As if we could eat any more, we ended the meal with the peach cobber with vanilla ice cream. The peaches in this were amazing and you could tell they were totally fresh! The topping to the cobbler was delicious as well, being some kind of lemony poppyseed bake. And the ice cream was plain yet perfect. The service was excellent and we just sat there for a long time after the meal and hung out and talked. They didn’t rush us and just let us enjoy ourselves. Considering the amount and quality of food you get, this is one of the most worthwhile prix fixe deals in the city. Go and give it a try!

With very few other options near the motel, I ventured out a little bit for dinner at Foster’s Steakhouse. There’s also a motel and a little store. It’s like its own little mini town. I really liked their paper placemats.
All the entrees come with bottomless soup or salad. I’d been craving salad for days, so I was really happy about the opportunity to eat soup again. I went with the french onion. It wasn’t the most fancy french onion soup in the world. Where were the rest of the croutons or the cheese? It didn’t matter. It was still pretty darn good and I knew it was homemade, and that’s really all that mattered to me.
I got a chicken stir-fry dish and it made me happy. It wasn’t anything exciting either, but I was happy to have veggies, and most of all, I was beyond ecstatic to have rice. I hadn’t had rice in what seemed like weeks, so the asian in me was craving it. The flavor of the sauce was probably just mostly soy sauce, which didn’t really do it for me, but everything was prepared well. It came with a load of garlic bread, because you know, that totally goes with rice and stir-fry. It was actually quite good, but there was way too much of it.
I was stuffed at this point but had to get a piece of their foster’s pie, to go. I think it had apples and berries and rhubarb and it was really good. I love me some pie and this was definitely excellent pie!

" list. So of course, I decided to try them all. Join me for this 15-post series, as I test out each of these cocktails to see just how worthy they are.
